Prepare for Higher Education Applications
If you''re finishing secondary school, now is the time to look at your grades, weigh up your options and prepare your higher education application calmly but with focus.
Here are some important tips to guide you through this crucial phase.
1. Collect All Relevant Information
Before you apply, check:
Your application grade for each course (high school average + exams, according to each institution''s criteria).
The prerequisites required (for some courses, such as Sports or Arts, there may be specific tests).
The last-placed students'' grades from previous years (helps you get an idea of the chances of getting in).
Consult the Guide to Applying to Higher Education on the DGES website: www.dges.gov.pt
2. Choose with your head (and heart)
You have 6 options in the application, in order of preference. Think carefully:
Where you want to study (location matters!)
Whether the course matches your interests and professional goals
Whether you''re willing to retake exams if you don''t get in at the first stage
Talk to teachers, former students, or use student community platforms to clarify doubts.
3. Apply carefully
You apply online via the DGES website. It is essential to
Validate the activation code on your citizen''s card or digital key;
Choose the right order of courses/institutions;
Meet the application deadline - this usually lasts about a week after the exam results are published.
4. Contact the Student Association
Academic and Student Associations are a great source of support. Many organize freshman welcome events, help with integration and even guide you in finding accommodation or study materials.
Tip: Get in touch with the AE as soon as possible - they''ve been through the same thing as you.
5. Prepare Psychologically for the Change
The transition from secondary to higher education is a significant change. Autonomy increases, the pace can be more demanding and you''ll be dealing with new environments and people.
Remember:
It''s normal to feel nervous or insecure.
Give yourself time to adapt.
Ask for help whenever you need it - In our residences we''ve created support bases so you don''t feel so out of place."
6. Plan your budget
University life requires some financial management, especially if you''re going to be living away from home. Make a list of your fixed expenses (rent, transport, food) and try to create a monthly plan.
Useful tools:
Apps like Toshl Finance, Mint or Excel can help you keep track of your spending.
6. Making the Most of Opportunities
University isn''t just about studying. This is where Royal stands out! In addition to the library and the comfort of your room, we offer welcome and themed parties and activities so you can explore the city where you''re staying!
You win:
Experience
Friendships for life
Professional contacts that could be important in the future
7. Not Placed? Don''t give up!
If you didn''t get in at the first stage, you still have hope. The 2nd round of applications is an opportunity to try again. And even if you don''t get in this year, there are other ways to get into higher education: professional higher technical courses (CTeSP), private universities or studying abroad.
Remember: your path may be different from what you planned, but that doesn''t mean it''s worse.
To sum up...
Entering higher education is an important milestone and the start of a journey of personal and academic growth. Make the most of every moment, keep yourself informed and, above all, believe in your worth. This new stage will be challenging - but also unforgettable.
Good luck, freshman!
